During therapy, it becomes clear that the infected partner is having difficulty expression his feelings and appears hostile and angry toward other partner. It is reported that the infected partner is also having difficulty performing everyday tasks. As a social work practitioner, your first step should be to:
A. Refer the couple to a gay therapist
B. Help the infected partner deal with his expected loss of functioning.
C. Help the couple deal with relationship issues, which may arise because of the illness.
D. Consider your own feelings about treating homosexual before proceeding with therapy.
C. Help the couple deal with relationship issues, which. May arise because of the illness.
Although, it is true that social workers must recognize their own feeling and how they feel about treating a gay couple, once in the initial session, the first thing the social worker should do is address the crisis issue at hand, which involves the relationship (communication) issues.
If need be, after helping the couple to recognize and address the issue(s) the referral to another therapist can be made.
