Discuss Weber’s essay on bureaucracy. Explain the negative and positive attributes of this system. Also explain its role in Weber’s concept of “iron cage.”
What will be an ideal response?
Some positive attributes of bureaucracies include: strong and effective armies could not be maintained, the mass production of goods and their sale would slow to a trickle, the thousands of miles of public roadways could not be paved, hospitals could not treat the millions of patients in need of care, and establishing a university capable of educating 20,000 students would be impossible. Of course, all of these tasks and countless others are themselves dependent on a bureaucratic organization capable of collecting tax dollars from millions of people.
