Compare and contrast x-ray versus pulmonary angiography
What will be an ideal response?
Both are used to diagnose a pulmonary embolism. An x-ray will only visualize and thereby diagnose if the pulmonary embolism had caused a pulmonary infarct, usually seen as wedge-shaped area of increased density in the lungs. Pulmonary angiography is the gold standard for the diagnosis of PE, as it allows for the visualization of the pulmonary artery and its branches. Occlusion of an artery shows as a filling defect, and impairment in blood flow is also determined based on the flow of the contrast material.
