Many motivation strategies can be summed up with the acronym "MUSIC" from the MUSIC® Model of Motivation: eMpowerment, Usefulness, Success, Interest, and Caring. Write one paragraph for each MUSIC component and in each paragraph include (a) an explanation of how the component is related to students' motivation (e.g., "Students are motivated when they believe that…") and (b) an example of

something you could do as a teacher (at any grade level or subject area) that would be consistent with that MUSIC component.

What will be an ideal response?

The five MUSIC components are described in Figure 5.10. The second column explains how each component is related to students' motivation and students should provide an answer similar to these explanations. The third column of the figure provides some example strategies, as does the text in the Promoting Motivation and Productive Affect section. Students should provide strategies consistent with these types of examples.
