Why are correlations useful in studying naturally occurring relationships between variables? Include the notion of random assignment in your response.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Certain variables, such as a person’s socioeconomic status, cannot be manipulated; that is, we cannot randomly assign people to a level/group of socioeconomic status. Likewise, it might be unethical to use random assignment in other situations. However, correlations allow us to study important naturally occurring relationships without using random assignment.
