List the words you would say in seeking clarification of her expression

What will be an ideal response?

ANS: Students' answers will vary. Seeking clarification may be especially helpful in circumstances where the social
worker and the client reflect cultural differences. Words, phrases, and gestures commonly used in one culture may
be nonexistent in another, or their meaning may differ dramatically. Although the client may know exactly what she
or he means by a particular term, you may not—at least when it is first used. Even when a client uses a standard
form of English, a term may have a unique meaning to him or her. Clients may use words that you have never heard
before, or they may use a familiar term in an unusual manner. The skill of seeking clarification can help in these
circumstances. In seeking clarification, you are looking for additional specific information about a particular word or
phrase or some other aspect of a client's verbal or nonverbal communication.
Seeking clarification usually occurs as a discrete form of open questioning, although it may occasionally
appear in the form of a closed question or a directive. Rather than encouraging clients to provide more general
information about a current or new topic, its purpose is to gain further understanding of specific aspects of a
previous message.
