How did Shakespearean drama portray "the other" ?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. In The Merchant of Venice, the Jewish merchant Shylock is alternately seen as a sympathetic victim of persecution and a bloodthirsty avatar of greed. Stereotypes of Jewish people are both portrayed and enacted in the play, which is also paralleled in two other Shakespeare dramas, Othelllo, and The Tempest. In Othello, the eponymous character (who has dark skin and is a former slave) is schemed against by a villainous Christian named Iago. Although a war hero noted for his loyalty and bravery, Othello succumbs to the savage primitive forces of jealousy and rage that may be stereotypically attributed to his race, A similar tension between shared humanity and racial anxieties occurs in the relationship between Prospero and his slave Caliban in The Tempest. Prospero, white king of the island has colonized and deposed Caliban, whom he associates with the devil and who tried to rape his daughter. Nevertheless, Shakespeare's portrayal of Caliban also contains elements of empathy with the "other" seen as victim.
