With healthcare delivery changing, what are the differences in the roles and education between the LPN/LVN and the RN?

a. What are some of the differences in roles and settings between the two?
b. Which of the different settings do you see the need for LPN/LVNs staying or continuing at the level of care they are presently giving and why?

Students' answers should include the following:
a. The differences in the two roles is changing, and discussion can be what has and is changing in the area where the student lives in and what is current according to the ANA and their definition of the responsibilities and roles of the RN and the LPN/LVN. The Nurse Practice Act also has clear and defined definitions of both professions' roles and responsibilities. The students can elaborate and discuss how these definitions apply to the hospitals and facilities around their area.
b. With the changes in healthcare, a lot of the hospitals are rearranging job descriptions and encouraging LPN/LVNs to go back to school and become RNs.
Discuss on which facilities such as the skilled nursing and long-term care may not see a change in the LPN/LVN role where the hospitals may. This may be an area or regional change—more than an insurance or healthcare amendment change.
