Discuss the role of consultation in assessment. Provide examples of when you will consult with a supervisor or colleague.
What will be an ideal response?
?All counselors occasionally experience the need for more information than they can elicit themselves. Even the most experienced and self-confident counselor knows when it is time to consult with someone who has specific expertise.
?One of your students may be having difficulty concentrating in school and have a hard time with reading assignments. This student may need to be tested for learning disabilities or perhaps have a medical examination to rule out any physical problems associated with these difficulties.
?One of your clients may tell you that he’s been dealing drugs or that he’s been involved with some other illegal activity. While you may be up to speed on agency policy and legal requirements related to reporting these activities, you’ll still want to consult with colleagues and the school’s legal advisor about appropriate actions to take.
?This is one more reason to have a good working relationship with a supervisor, or at least colleagues with whom you may periodically consult, and access to experts in fields out of your expertise (medical, legal, special education, and so forth).
?Undiagnosed medical complications, unreported sexual or physical abuse, or missed opportunities for medication are some of the other problems that can be avoided by seeking appropriate help.
