Battering in intimate relationships often continue for a long time, often a lifetime. Why do
intimate partners continue in the violent relationship?
What will be an ideal response?
Although Goodrum, et.al., focused upon batterers and their behavior, they also alluded to
the partners role in maintaining the violent relationship. Most violence is directed toward
women and/or children, who are selected for or taught to be compliant, fearful, and
insecure, and they often feel guilty or responsible in some degree for causing their partners
violence. They often become secretive about the abuse, feel very alone in the world, feel
incompetent in challenging the violent behavior, and form irrational rationalizations about
the abusive behavior. They are often persons who are very dependent, pessimistic and
fearful of loosing the relationship.
Some battered persons can be taught to seek help from professional sources to improve
their situation in conjunction with their partner, and enable the partner to perhaps change
their violent behavior patterns. They must learn to no longer rationalize the violence as
their fault, and learn to not see themselves or become a victim in relationships. Both the
batterer and the victim must be treated in violent relationships.
