A person cannot survive long without water. In fact, the majority of our bodies are made up of water (60 percent in males; 55 percent in females), and most chemical reactions in our bodies take place in this water medium. Water is needed for the digestion and absorption of food, is a critical ingredient in blood, provides lubrication, and aids in temperature control in the body. To maintain a healthy water balance and sustain life, one must consume enough water to balance what is lost through urine, sweat, evaporation, and bowel movements.
