Explain the function of slave patrols, and how it might be argued that they were the first form of policing in the United States

What will be an ideal response?

Southern slave patrols were the legal mechanism for enforcing the slave codes of the day, which defined slaves as the property of their masters who were indentured for life, and gave slave masters the right to control their “property” through discipline and punishment.

As slave patrols were organized and publicly funded, some experts argue that they marked the first formal form of policing in America. They were a formal means of social control, and unlike constables, watchmen, and sheriffs, who also had nonpolice functions, the slave patrols functioned solely for the enforcement of colonial and state laws.
