Tactile fremitus is more pronounced in which area of the thorax?
a. near the major bronchi and trachea c. in the periphery of the lung
b. over the ribs d. over the scapula
D
Tactile fremitus is the palpable vibration of the chest wall. Sounds generated from the larynx are transmitted through the patent bronchi and through the lung parenchyma to the chest wall where you feel them as vibrations. Fremitus is more pronounced near the major bronchi and the trachea. Fremitus normally decreases as you progress down to the periphery of the lung because more tissue impedes sound transmission. Minimal or no fremitus will be heard over bony structures, such as ribs and scapula, because bone damps out sound transmission.
