What would happen if a neuron with a resting membrane potential of ?100 mV and a threshold level of
?70 mV received three IPSPs of ?5 mV and four EPSPs of ?10 mV in close succession? What will be an ideal response?
If the IPSPs and EPSPs arrive at approximately the same time, they would be summed. That is, the
sum of the three IPSPs is -15 mV, and this would hyperpolarize the membrane. The sum of the four
EPSPs is -40 mV, and this would hypopolarize the membrane. Summing the IPSPs and EPSPs yields
a hypopolarization of -75 mV which is almost, but not quite, sufficient to reach the threshold.
Consequently, an action potential would not be generated.
