What can you do to facilitate drainage?


• Check the connections to make certain the tube is connected to the suction source.
• Make certain the tube isn't kinked. Ensure that the suction device is working properly.
• Have A.G. change position (turn) to see whether this allows the tube to drain more freely.
• If there is a physician's order, irrigate the tube with 30 mL of normal saline, then immediately
aspirate the fluid.
• Last, if necessary, change the position of the NGT and retape. Some facilities will require another
x-ray examination to verify placement.
