Explain two advantages that arise from humans having gyri and sulci in their cortex rather than it being smooth.
What will be an ideal response?
One advantage to having sulci and gyri is that these fissures triple the surface area of the brain. The increased surface area means that a human can have a larger brain than their skull would otherwise allow for. In addition, the folds of the cortex make it easier for axons to come in contact with cell bodies, making the connections that are needed for signals to be sent between neurons.
