Discuss the final Golden Age of the Roman Empire and the period immediately following it.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary, but students should demonstrate an understanding of the Emperor Valentinian's rule, which he split with his brother Valens. Under Valentinian, borders were secure, the treasury was well funded, disputes with Christians were settled peaceably, and rural life was secure. However, military recruitment was down, the western part of the empire was underfunded, and the incursions of barbarians became more and more problematic. Huns, Franks, and Celts threatened the hegemony of Roman power. Finally, with Valentinian's death, the arrival of the Visigoths, and the disastrous Battle of Adrianople, the Golden age succumbed to a period of barbarian invasion and destruction.
