What role does race play in the treatment of corrections-involved women and their risk factors for arrest?
What will be an ideal response?
Although understudied, race plays a significant role in the treatment of women by the criminal justice system. Attitudes toward women of color, stemming from the days of slavery, have created an unfair assumption of "natural criminality" that has contributed toward making African American women the largest demographic group of incarcerated women. At the same time, racism against women of color also makes them one of the most "invisible" populations in the corrections system, even though they are more likely than White women to be abused or mistreated by correctional personnel.
