Contrast the function and location of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

What will be an ideal response?

The sympathetic nervous system serves the function of preparing the body to respond to challenges, which is why it is often called the "fight or flight" portion of the autonomic nervous system. This system increases heart rate, blood pressure, and sweating to help you respond to stressors. This system arises from the middle of the spinal cord. The parasympathetic nervous system is sometimes referred to as the "rest and digest" portion of the autonomic nervous system because it activates digestive and repair functions and slows heart rate. The parasympathetic nervous system arises from the top and bottom portions of the spinal cord, resulting in more independent control over the different components of this system.
