Describe the normal distribution and why it is important for quantitative data analysis.

What will be an ideal response?

• Normal Distribution: Illustrates the assumption that the majority of values or scores you observe are located near the mean
o Students might define skew, which refers to the degree to which scores or values cluster above or below the mean
• Understanding the normal curve and skew is important as it ultimately relates to the shape of the data and the underlying distribution of scores
• It is important to know whether or not the data are normally distributed because of the assumptions you will then be able to make about your dataset and therefore which statistical tests you can use
o Parametric vs. non-parametric data and the statistical tests that correspond to each of these. If data is non-parametric, than different inferential statistics will be used
