Explain how age affects the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

What will be an ideal response?

Excluding the congenital heart defects, the prevalence of CVD in the United States increases with age. For persons between the ages of 40-59 years old (the "baby boomers"), 39.6% of men and 39.6% of women have CVD. For persons between the ages of 60-79 years old, the rate has almost doubled to 73.6% of men and 73.1% of women with CVD. Over 40 million American adults with CVD are over the age of 60 years. The prevalence of stroke also increases with age, ranging from around 2% among persons 40-59 to 7.5% among persons 60-79 and over 14% among persons 80 years of age or older.
