Distinguish between social work, pastoral counseling and spiritual direction.
What will be an ideal response?
The goals of social work remain restoration of social functioning, connection to existing resources and developing supportive networks and services in the older person environment. Spiritually is a complement, not a substitute for those goals. Pastoral counseling on the other hand retains the goal of assisting the older adult to use religious faith to find hope during difficult times of life. It is explicitly spiritual and about finding meaning and solace in a higher power. Spiritual direction is different and has been called ‘holy listening” An older adult seeks spiritual direction to help deepen his or her own spirituality and relationship with a higher power. These may be adjunctive to the role of social work, but defining the separate roles is essential to establishing the value of each. ?
