Define “language games” and its use within Lyotard’s conception of metanarratives.
What will be an ideal response?
Lyotard borrows the concept of “language games” from the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951). By language games, Wittgenstein sought to convey the idea that meaning is determined by a set of rules governing the contextual use of words. Lyotard draws a parallel between the state of knowledge in the postmodern condition and the “language games” described by Wittgenstein. Following Lyotard, all forms of knowledge have rules that prescribe both their use and their meaning. Thus, metanarratives are not established systems of “truth” but “language games” bounded by particular rules accessible only to the initiated.
