Children form their basic food preferences and dietary habits during the early years. Identify and discuss factors that may contribute to, and influence, their ideas about food. What can families do to promote healthy eating behaviors?

What will be an ideal response?

Children develop ideas about food from a variety of sources, including their families, peers, school, and television (and other media forms). Television and family food preferences and eating patterns exert a particularly strong influence on young children's early food choices while peers and some media forms become more influential as children age. Family members should serve as positive role models for children. They can take steps to improve their own nutrition knowledge, plan nutritious meals, and engage in physical activity on a daily basis. Children should also have opportunities, planned and spontaneous, to learn about basic nutrition at home and in school.
