a. A pouch or internal reservoir for fecal material
Stores fecal material for several hours until it is manually expelled
Used after surgical removal of the ileum for whatever reasons
b. Temporary catheter inserted by surgeon protruding through a stoma, attached to a nipple on the inside of bowel
In postoperative period, the nurse replaces packing and empties the reservoir the surgeon created inside that holds the fecal material.
Catheter is checked frequently for lack of drainage, obstruction, or leakage.
With healing, the capacity of reservoir increases.
During postoperative period, nurse closely monitors I&Os, fluids, and electrolytes.
c. Advantages are there is no outer pouch for leakage or smells. Eliminates outside appliances
Disadvantage is that you have catheter equipment to carry with you to remove stool from the pouch if it gets full and you are not at home for removal
