• A summary of this concept: This perspective is sometimes referred to as hegemony theory–the view that the media are instruments of social control and are used by members of the ruling classes to create “false consciousness” in the working classes. Although there are various conflict approaches, most view ownership and economic control of the media as a key factor in determining what kinds of messages are disseminated around the globe. Is media bias inevitable as transnational media industries become even more concentrated in the hands of a few megacorporations? Many media analysts believe that this is exactly what has already happened.
