What are the dimensions of paraphilic sexuality?
What will be an ideal response?
According to John Money, there are four dimensions of paraphilic sexuality, and each paraphilia can
be defined in accordance to these dimensions.
• Masochism vs. sadism: Can be seen as exaggerated dominance–submission dimension. Related
to humiliation, subjugation, and pain. Depends on a perspective; same act can be masochistic or sadistic.
• Active vs. passive: Depends on role. Some acts are exclusively active or passive; others can be
both.
• Mild vs. severe: Proposed 3-point scale. Severe paraphilias make object of arousal indispensable
and necessary and also make feelings and other person irrelevant. In milder cases, paraphilic object can
only be an enhancer, without strong effects.
• Symbolic vs. direct: In direct paraphilias, object itself is cause of arousal. In symbolic paraphilias,
object bears additional meaning and symbolism.
