Explain the importance of drug testing for police personnel

Nearly all departments have some form of drug testing related to recruitment procedures, special assignments and probable cause cases. The use of legal and illegal substances by officers impedes physio-motor skills and presents a wide range of moral and legal dilemmas related to drug enforcement.
Drug addicted police officers are police officers that cannot do their job and are subject to corruption and blackmail. Law enforcement cannot afford these officers and need to dismiss them from the force. The risk is too great to allow them to return to the police force. It is a sad but necessary policy.
