What is trauma-informed care? What forms of trauma do trauma-informed care programs address? What are the characteristics of a typical trauma-informed care program? What level of empirical support do such programs have? Why are such programs important to the juvenile justice system?

What will be an ideal response?

At a minimum, answers should address a definition of trauma-informed care.
Programs that have developed from trauma-informed care focus on any number of
different types of adverse experiences, such as poverty, witnessing violence and death,
domestic violence, bullying, maltreatment victimization, and others. Significant
advances in programmatic treatment for childhood trauma have been made. Such
programs typically range in treatment time from 4 to 36 sessions or weeks, and take
place in a community family setting. Some of these programs have a strong and/or
growing level of empirical support. The programs are important to the juvenile justice
system because a large portion of youths involved in the juvenile justice system have
also experienced trauma in the past or are currently experiencing the effects of trauma.
