Explain language development in young children.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Children speak their first words at about 10–12 months of age and learn new words at a rate of about 8–11 per month. However, at about 18 months of age, or when children have about 50 words in their active vocabulary, the rate at which they learn new words increases substantially, to between 22 and 37 words per month. This has been termed the word spurt. Most of the words children learn during this time are nouns, often labels for objects. Some children begin their word spurt shortly after their first birthdays, whereas other don’t start until age 2 or later.
