To support English-language learning for young children it is important to explicitly link concepts to the student's background and experiences. In addition, key vocabulary should be emphasized, intentionally selecting words children are likely to use in conversations, providing direct instruction regarding word meaning, and making sure thee are extensive opportunities to hear and apply new vocabulary words. It is also important to use speech appropriate for children's level of language proficiency, avoiding jargon, slang terms, and run-on sentences.
