Despite its complexity, Stella’s sculptural relief takes a form reminiscent of a spiral, a favorite decorative form of ancient peoples. What do you think attracted ancient peoples to the spiral form?
What will be an ideal response?
Ancient peoples had an appreciation of the contours of topology and the environment around them and reflected these forms in their productions. The spiral is a recurrent shape found throughout nature in structures like flowers, ferns, and heavenly bodies in the night sky. Like the implementation of the sun’s circular and symmetrical movement in cromlech megalithic construction, the spiral reproduces a symmetrical fixed curve that seems to have inspired ancient peoples. In addition, like other geometric shapes, the spiral probably served a symbolic purpose.
