How do nutrient needs differ from pregnancy? What are the key nutrients that should be included in the breastfeeding mother's diet?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Nutrient and kcal needs of lactation are "tremendous"-exceeding those of pregnancy. DRIs for nutrients during lactation are based: quantity of milk produced by average mother, milk's nutrient content, amounts of her nutrient stores used to produce milk. (fun fact: iron needs are lower than both pregnant and non-pregnant women because the ingredients for milk are drawn from mother's deficits being made up by mother's stores) her nutritional status is important! Water is the key component of milk, milk quality and quantity decreases if not drinking enough fluids, mother uses 800 kcals/day producing 750 ml(3 cups) of milk daily, needs enough calcium, magnesium, zinc, folate, Vit B-6, essential fatty acids-like Omega 3s to support baby's nervous system development, not recommended to restrict diet. calcium important so mom doesn't use up from her own bones.
