What historical developments led to dictatorships in Rome?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Many economic, political, social, and military crises gave rise to the domination by Sulla, Marius, and finally the Triumvirate. Particularly problematic were the growth of latifundia and the sale of land by soldiers to an increasingly wealthy equestrian and senatorial class, as well as the impoverishment of multitudes by the growth of slavery from recently incorporated territories. The growing imbalance of power that had led to the rise of the Gracchi, as well as the perception of corruption within the Senate and governing bodies of Rome, facilitated the growth of dictators in the late Republic.
