Define and give examples of the core characteristics of children who are identified with ADHD

What will be an ideal response?

• Core characteristics – compromised functioning in two areas (inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity); child could have deficits in one or both of these areas
• Examples related to inattention – short attention span, inability to play a game or concentrate on an academic task, etc.
• Examples related to hyperactivity/impulsivity – always on the go, excessive motor activity, inability to sit still, fidgeting, excessive talking, intrusive interactions with others
• Could also comment on the fact that these behaviors are seen in many children, but children with ADHD must display these behaviors in multiple settings and the behaviors must contribute to some sort of impairment in development
