Many parents experience shock in response to the birth of a child with a disability. Discuss some of the feelings

associated with shock, and the factors that affect the duration of this stage.

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER: Often the initial response to a young infant with disabilities is shock. Feelings common to
this period are anxiety, guilt, numbness, confusion, anger, disbelief, and despair. The
ways in which parents move through this period are influenced greatly by the responses
they receive from professionals, friends, their own parents, and religious advisers.
However, the duration of this stage and intensity of related feelings is highly
individualistic.
Parents of the infant with a disability benefit greatly from individuals who are willing to
listen and join with them in the grieving process. Additionally, we know that
grandparents may play a positive role in helping their children interpret the birth of a
child with a disability and related events in ways that are realistic as well as optimistic.
With appropriate support, parents become survivors rather than victims.
