What is the difference between direct and indirect assessment measures? Which is a more effective means for conducting a summative assessment, and why?

What will be an ideal response?

Direct measures are measures performed through assessments which examine a student's ability to apply what has been learned (i.e., skills and knowledge). Indirect measures are assessments and/or products that only measure a student's possession of knowledge and skills – not their application of it. Direct measures are more effective for summative assessments because they demonstrate the application of new learning and are a more accurate measure of student learning.
