Discuss some uses for grade equivalents as well as some potential limitations and factors to consider in their interpretation

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Grade equivalents are used to compare an examinee's performance to the average student's performance on that grade level. Grade equivalents are divided into 10 units, which correspond with the month of the school year. So, 1.4 would be December of first grade. Equivalent scores are based on a mean; typically, half of the scores fall below grade level and half above. However, grade equivalent scores should be used cautiously. An equivalent score above one's grade level does not determine placement. It simply means an older student would have scored similar had they taken that grade's test. Grade equivalent scores should not be compared to scores of other students, scores on other tests, or different subsets of the same tests.
