Stage 1 (fresh stage):few days after death, no physical signs of decomposition, body enters algor mortis, insects lay eggs in the body, VOCs are produced; Stage 2 (putrefaction stage):odor, color change and bloating, marbelization of skin, color changes to green then brown, skin becomes fragile and body hair is easily removed, continued insect activity; Stage 3 (black putrefaction stage):10-20 days after death, body cavity ruptures and gases escape, body color darkens from greenish color, insect activity greatly increases, bones become apparent; Stage 4 (butyric fermentation stage): body begins to dry out, mummification process, adiopocere formation, all internal organs lost to insect activity; Stage 5 (dry decay stage): no soft tissues remains, skeletonization occurs, longest of the processes.
