What are the components in a behavior hypothesis? Provide an example of a behavior hypothesis.

What will be an ideal response?

The hypothesis should describe: (1) the setting, the immediate antecedents, and the immediate consequences that surround the problematic behavior; (2) the behavior that is occurring; (3) the function of the behavior; and (4) any other relevant information.Examples may varybut must include all of the four components, as in the following example: Jenny argues with her teacher during math class when the teacher tries to correct her mistake on the daily worksheet. She is more likely to do this if the worksheet is difficult and she makes a lot of mistakes. When she argues with her teacher, she is asked to stand in the hallway. Jenny’s arguing behavior is likely to attempt to avoid the teacher correction in front of the class.
