The example in Figure 5-29 has poor alignment.

Figure 5-29

a. Make a photocopy of the figure and draw the current virtual lines created by the text and pictures.

b. Make another photocopy of the figure and with scissors and tape, create a better version by aligning the text and the pictures. You won’t have to move any one element very much; but you want to create as many unbroken virtual lines as possible. Feel free to modify the horizontal rule in any way that will help make a stronger alignment.

c. Make a photocopy of your improved versions and draw in the virtual lines.

a. There are only two unbroken lines that run the entire width of the page. One is a horizontal line at the top of the page, and another one that runs across the top of the two text columns.

b. The following is one possible answer. The image and the big block of text have moved so that they are left aligned with the columns of text appearing in the body of the page. The horizontal rule is shorter. In the original example, it stuck out beyond the right and left margins. It’s not content, so you could even eliminate it.

It’s also possible to right-justify the door icon, since if you read the text of the example, it follows the last word of the last sentence and represents the next thing. However, this is subtle and is not something that students should be expected to do at this stage. It’s great if they just got everything left aligned. But you can take special joy in anyone who considers it.
