Cross-border gangs, gangs that pursue illegal activities in more than one country, are especially prominent on both sides of the Mexico–U.S. border. Gangs such as the Sureños and Barrio Azteca are involved in a variety of drug- and weapon-based crimes, such as drug manufacturing and distribution, as well as smuggling of firearms. In addition, they can be active participants in human smuggling, human trafficking, and the child sex trade.
