What is problematic about the idea of Asian Americans as a “model minority?”
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. A sample answer follows. The idea of Asian Americans as a "model minority" is a stereotype. First, not all Asian American individuals are alike. Some are rich and well educated, while others are refugees. Second, not all Asian American and Pacific Islander groups are alike. Refugees from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam are overrepresented in the corrections system. If people assume that all API individuals are part of a model minority, then the API individuals who are incarcerated will not get the culturally sensitive programs that could help them.
