Suppose that you have two clients in treatment, one is an adult female being treated for depression and another is a 6-year-old child being treated because of poor motivation in school. For each of these situations, indicate whether you would be inclined to seek a standardized scale for measuring client progress or develop your own individualized scale. Explain why.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: It makes sense to seek a standardized depression scale for the first client and to develop an individualized scale for the second. Depression is a target behavior that can be measured by a number of validated scales that were developed by experts on the measurement of depression. In the second situation, a 6-year-old child will not likely understand a lot of terms of standardized scales. Furthermore, motivation for school is a bit more vague than depression so it may not be easy to find a scale that measures it.
Learning Objective: 13.2: Describe the mechanisms for achieving measurement accuracy, with a focus on reducing measurement error by certain tests of the reliability and validity of measurement tools.
