Appealing to needs involves attempts to persuade by calling the audience to action by focusing on physical and psychological needs and desires. Speakers can appeal to physical needs such as food,
water, and sleep; safety needs such as stability, protection, and freedom; social needs such as
affection, group membership, and support from family; and self-esteem needs that include recognition,
respect from others, and self-respect.
