Do you think gender norms are important to uphold for the function of our society? Why or why not? What do you think would happen if we no longer had gender norms?

What will be an ideal response?

Varies. Students may choose either side of the argument as long as they provide support. One may state that gender norms are important to uphold the function of our society as they provide clear rules and roles. When we have distinct roles in our society we can avoid confusion. A student may argue that gender norms help organize society by keeping men and women in line. A student may also argue that gender norms are not important in society. Perhaps gender norms prevent people from being their true selves or gaining real happiness, which can hinder family lives and even work performance. Students should explain what they think would happen if we no longer had gender norms. This is very open to interpretation.
