Describe the “brain drain.” What causes the brain drain and how are countries on the sending end of migration impacted by the brain drain? What can these countries do to mitigate the impacts of the current brain drain and/or prevent further drain from occurring?

What will be an ideal response?

The brain drain describes the phenomenon that accompanies the mass migration of a country’s educated groups. Many low-income nations are and have experienced significant losses in their college educated and professional populations, particularly in the health care industry. This leaves a void in the labor market (skill drain) as well as a void in the intangible resources of the countries. Training and education are impacted. The brain drain is caused by migration for opportunity and advancement. Higher income nations have the infrastructure and resources to recruit and compensate professionals drawing them away from home communities. Solutions include using remittances to improve education and infrastructure at home to limit future migration and drain, draw back expats, and coordination with international community to limit or manage migration as to assist developing nations.
