Describe the functioning of a general circulation model. What are some of the predictions for the 21st century based on GCMs?
What will be an ideal response?
GCMs are statistical models representing the physical processes in the atmosphere, oceans, and land surface and are used for simulating the response of the global climate system to increases in greenhouse gases. GCMs depict the climate using a 3D grid over the global.
Different models with different assumptions produce different results. All scenarios of the AOGCM, though, show continued warming throughout the 21st century. See Figure 8.25.
