Explain the significance of voir dire.
What will be an ideal response?
Once prospective jurors report to a courtroom, they participate in what is known as voir dire ("to see to speak"). The voir dire involves prospective jurors being questioned under oath by the attorneys and the judge to help determine their appropriateness to sit as a juror for a specific trial. The "official goal" is to select jurors who can consider the case in a fair, an impartial, and an unbiased manner. While this is true to a degree, in reality, attorneys want jurors who are predisposed to rule in their favor.
