When harm comes to a client by a nurse or other healthcare worker, the act is called a tort. Torts can be intentional or unintentional

a. What are the intentional torts and give examples of these.
b. What are some types of unintentional torts and what would be an example of these?

Students' answers should include the following:
a. Intentional torts are defined as acts that are intentional, deliberate, and purposefully done to a person (client) that harms them. Whether the act was an actual action or failure to act, the result was intentional harm to the other person. Intentional torts include assault, battery, false imprisonment, invasion of privacy, and defamation.
Discuss on each of the individual intentional torts and what makes up each in the client care area.
b. There are two types of unintentional torts: negligence and malpractice.
Discussion on what these are and examples of each of these in the healthcare area could be done. Also, Box 5-2 can be discussed here.
Students can focus on how to prevent intentional and unintentional torts in their workplace.
